Chapter 5: Family Breakfast

I stood in the guest room doorway in a T-shirt that came to my knees and listened to a man whistle in the kitchen.

It was a happy, off-key whistle, and I knew it from the elevator at work.

"Leland," I said under my breath, and went to find pants.

When I came out, Leland Stratton was at the stove in a gray cardigan, flipping an omelet.

Hannah sat on a bar stool beside him with a bakery box open in front of her and her eyes enormous.

"I tried to stop him," Hannah said. "He has a key."

"Family key," Leland said cheerfully. "I've had it since Weston bought the place. I make him breakfast whenever he's in trouble, and from the papers, he's been in a lot of trouble."

He slid the omelet onto a plate and held it out to me.

"For the new girlfriend. No mushrooms, Hannah says you hate mushrooms."

"I do," I said.

"Hannah is a very good source."

"I'm a very good friend," Hannah said, and gave me a look that said we would be discussing everything.

Weston came in from the hall, buttoning his cuffs.

"Uncle," he said. "It's six-fifteen."

"I know. I was awake, and I wanted to say it in person." Leland put down the spatula and took my hand in both of his. "I've been trying to get this boy to settle down for ten years. Delaney, you have no idea what you've done for this family."
