Chapter 14: Sunday in Margate

Gail's house in Margate was a split-level with a screened porch and a plastic wreath still hanging on the door from Christmas.

Silvio parked across the street.

He didn't turn off the engine until I touched his hand.

"You don't have to come in," I said.

"I'm already in the car."

Hazel had come up from Margate Avenue on her bike.

She was sitting on the porch steps with her knees up and a pot of coffee in her lap.

She stood up when she saw us, and her face was pale under the freckles.

"She's been cooking since seven," Hazel said. "She made the lasagna with the ricotta you hate."

"Of course she did."

Gail opened the screen door before we reached the top step.

She had put on a pressed blouse and lipstick.

She had gone out of her way to look like a woman with nothing to hide.

Her hands were shaking.

"Come in," she said. "Sit at the table. I've put out the good plates."

Gail served the lasagna herself, one square each, and she didn't sit until everyone had a plate in front of them.
