Chapter 7: The Creek

We got to the creek in his truck with my ruined shirt held shut under his jacket.

Fish Creek was running high with snowmelt, brown and fast, and eleven Colby cows stood in it to their bellies.

The river pasture fence lay flat for thirty feet.

A calf had gone down in the current on the far side and was bawling, its legs folded under it.

The Colbys' older hired man was already there on a quarter horse, trying to turn the cows back.

He wouldn't look at me.

"Wire was down when I got here, ma'am," he said.

"Whose wire?"

"Yours."

Amos was on his knees at the fence line, turning the cut end of a strand in his fingers.

He held it up for me to see.

The wire had been snipped clean, and the ends were curled outward, toward Arvidson ground.

"Cut from the Colby side," he said, and let the hired man hear it. "Somebody wanted it to look like you did it."

The hired man's face closed up.

"I only work for them," he said.

"I know you do."

I didn't wait to hear more.

I tore off my jacket and boots, waded into the creek to my thighs, and got my arms around the calf.

The water was so cold my lungs stopped.

Amos came in behind me and took the calf's weight, and together we dragged it up the bank and got it standing.

It bawled, wobbled, and found its mother.
