Chapter 14: The Feed Store

On Saturday we drove to the feed store together, and I kept my hand on his thigh the whole way.

He let it stay.

At the second stop sign he put his hand over mine and squeezed once, hard, and then he put both hands back on the wheel.

"Last time I'll let you," he said.

"You said that Thursday."

"I meant it Thursday."

I laughed, and he didn't, and I knew he was thinking about August.

I didn't let him.

I slid my hand higher until he said my name through his teeth, and then I took it back and sat primly with my hands in my lap while he parked.

The lot was full, because Saturday is when the whole valley buys feed.

Inside it smelled of molasses and sweet oats.

There were twelve or fifteen people by the counter, ranchers in their good hats, two wives, the man who ran the sale barn in Big Timber.

Darrell Waggoner stood in the middle of them with a coffee, telling a story.

He saw us come in and raised his cup.

"Here's the man himself," he said, warm and loud. "Ward, we were just talking about you."

Ward stopped.

"Were you."

"Only good things." Darrell smiled around at the circle. "I was saying what a hard thing it is, a man in your position. Marries a sick woman, buries her, stays on to raise her girl. Everybody admires it."

Nobody said anything.

A woman by the register looked into her purse.

"And now Lulu's eighteen," Darrell said gently, "and the stud book's hers, and her mother's land is half hers, and half yours. Funny how it all lines up."

"Darrell," Ward said.

"I'm not accusing anyone, I'm only saying what people say." He lifted a hand. "Folks have wondered for a while whether a man marries a woman for her heart or her nine hundred acres. And whether he keeps a young girl close and teaches her to depend on him, so the land stays where he can reach it."
