Chapter 5: The Gate

I got out of the truck.

My knees weren't steady, and the gravel was loud under my boots.

Ward came around the front of the truck, and the headlights threw his shadow across the pasture gate.

He dropped the tailgate with one hard pull.

"Up," he said.

I climbed up and sat on the cold metal.

He stood between my knees and looked at me, breathing hard.

"You sat through that whole supper," he said, "and you didn't say a word."

"You told me not to."

"I told you to say thank you."

"I said thank you."

"You did." His thumb came up and dragged across my bottom lip. "You said it to Darrell with my hand on you."

I couldn't answer.

My whole body had been on fire since the pie, and I leaned into his thumb.

"Take your jeans off," he said.

I looked at him.

"You heard me. Boots first."

I tugged my boots off and set them in the truck bed.

Then I unbuttoned my jeans with fingers that kept slipping.

He didn't help.

He stood and watched me push them down my hips and kick them off, and then my underwear after them, until I sat on the cold tailgate bare from the waist down, with the night air on my skin.

His eyes went over me slowly.

"Lie back," he said.

I lay back on the metal.

Above me the sky was black and full of stars.

"Knees up. Feet on the edge. Open."

I did it, and I could feel exactly how wet I was.

Ward made a sound I'd never heard from him.

He went down on his knees in the gravel in front of the tailgate.

His hands closed on my thighs and pushed them wider.

"I've wanted to see you since the barn," he said into my skin. "Since your hand under mine on that mare."

His mouth landed on the inside of my thigh and I jumped.
