Chapter 11: Ask Your Daddy

I told myself I was going to look and leave.

On Friday I stood outside the Deverill Gallery at six, in my good black dress, with my phone in my hand.

I'd sent Abram a photo of the invitation that morning.

He had called me, which he never did, and said, "Don't go."

"I want to know what he has."

"He has nothing. He wants you alone."

"Then I'll be the one who walks in and walks out."

He was quiet for a long time.

"Text me when you're inside," he said. "And when you're out."

That was all he'd said, and I'd gone anyway, because I was tired of being told to wait for the truth.

The gallery was empty.

The lights were low, my old wall had been repainted dove grey, and it held a row of other people's drawings of hands.

Not one of them was mine.

"Joss."

Sheldon came out of the back office in his shirtsleeves, with a folder under his arm and his best smile.

"You came."

"You said you had something of Abram's."

"Straight to it. I always did admire that about you." He set the folder on a table. "Look."

I didn't move.

"Please," he said. "It's only paper."

I stepped up and opened it.

On top was a single page on heavy cream letterhead, with a printed key at the top, the same key that was on Lise's card.

It was a letter to Sheldon, signed C. MacAteer, and it said his membership at the Night Press was revoked, effective at once, and that he was not to return.
