Chapter 24: First Night
Da-hae had him against the door of Sun-ja's spare room before the stair light clicked off.
"Eat first," she said into his mouth, and then she kissed him again, and neither of them moved toward the bowl on the table.
Sun-ja had put the key in his hand an hour earlier, in the kitchen.
Her face had been so carefully blank that he had wanted to climb into the stove.
The stew had been waiting on the little table by the window, with two spoons.
They would eat it later.
The room over the diner had a single bed, a quilt and a radiator that knocked.
Its window looked down on the old station and the headframe lights beyond it.
The Ledger said the Pit was at rest, and his mother had been asleep since eleven fourteen.
Da-hae had asked him the time in the stairwell, and written it on the back of her hand.
She had written the next line under it, in smaller figures, without showing him.
Now she took his collar in both fists and walked him backward until his knees met the bed.
"Take your bandages off," she said.
"They're off. They came off Tuesday."
"Show me."
He held out both hands.
The palms had healed in pink ridges where the coal had opened them.
The old burn on his right wrist stood out white against the rest.
She took his right hand in both of hers and turned it over under the lamp.
She put her mouth to the center of the palm.
It was a plain, open touch, a lip pressed to a callus.
