Chapter 15: The Whole Floor
On Wednesday at six in the evening, Rhoda texted me.
"Get up here, kid."
I took the service elevator to thirty-eight in my street clothes, with my braid wet from the sink.
The magazine floor was a sea of desks, and every one of them had a person standing next to it.
Nobody was working.
Two hundred faces were turned toward the glass wall of the conference room at the far end.
Rhodes stood in front of it, with his jacket off and a sheet of paper in his hand.
He stood tense and focused, as if waiting for a gate to open.
Beside the wall stood the three board members from the Sunday table, with their arms folded.
They had come down from thirty-nine, and they had the faces of men who had been handed a bill.
Rhoda found me and put her shoulder against mine.
"He called an all-floor at five-thirty," she said. "Didn't tell anybody what for."
