Chapter 24: Fallout
"He knew!" Kiersten said again. "He knew about the supplier. He told me to get the cost down. He said he didn't want the details."
Four hundred heads swung to the head table.
Jarrod sat with his hands flat on the white cloth on either side of his plate.
The fire investigator stopped at the foot of the stage.
"Ms. Draper," he said. "We'll get to Mr. Ackerly."
"I didn't do anything. I was in East Grand Rapids all night. Ask him."
"I did ask him." The investigator looked at the head table. "His answer changed twice."
A murmur went across the room.
"Your phone was at the DeVries gate at two-oh-nine," the investigator said. "The same minute as your car. We have the gas station in Douglas where you filled a red can at one-forty. We have you on their camera, in a white coat."
Kiersten's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"Kiersten Draper," the older officer said, coming up the steps. "You're under arrest for arson."
"This is a party," she said. "This is my launch."
