Chapter 25: Accountable

I didn't say anything.

For ten years I would have said something for him.

Coby waited.

He was waiting for me to tell him what to do, and I wasn't going to.

"It's your call," I said. "Either way, your room's there."

He looked at his father for a long time.

Jarrod stood under a parking lot light with his bow tie hanging out of his pocket and nobody around him.

No phone in his hand.

No Kiersten.

"Just tonight," Coby said. "He shouldn't be in that house by himself tonight."

My father made a small noise, and then stopped himself.

"I'll be back Sunday," Coby said to me. "On the bus. Don't come get me."

"Okay."

"I mean it. I want to come back on my own."

"I said okay."

He walked across the asphalt to his father.

Jarrod put a hand out, and then put it back in his pocket.

They walked to the black Audi side by side, the same height now, not talking.

I watched until the car turned out onto the river road.

Cullen came and stood behind me and put both arms around me from the back.
