Chapter 5: A Borrowed Face
On Thursday, in a costume shop in Waukegan, I had paid cash for a blonde bob wig.
I hadn't known yet what it was for.
On Saturday afternoon I stood at the kitchen door of the Kensington house in Lake Forest, in a black dress and that wig, and Edmund held the door for me.
"Third floor, east corridor," he whispered. "She lies down when she's upset. She will be there another hour."
"And if someone stops me?"
"They will call you Camille, and you will let them."
The kitchen was full of caterers carrying silver trays.
A woman in an apron looked up from a tray of crab cakes and said, "Miss Camille, you should be resting."
"I needed air," I said.
It came out in my sister's voice.
I had been hearing that voice at the next pillow for twenty-eight years.
The woman patted my arm and went back to her tray.
I walked into the front hall, where every guest believed they were comforting me.
Everyone turned. Everyone reached.
"Oh, Camille, you poor thing."
"Anything you need, sweetheart."
"She's with the angels."
A hand took my elbow, and I turned my head.
Constance Kensington looked at me in her black silk and her pearls.
"Darling," she said. "You should be upstairs."
"I couldn't lie there," I said. "I wanted to be with people."
She cupped my face.
Her palm was dry and cool, and she smelled of roses and money.
"You're being so brave," she said. "Nobody will ever know what it cost you. You've been a saint about that unfortunate girl."
