Chapter 16: Cost
The floor of the cabin vanished, and I was fourteen years old again.
I lay on a steel table under white lights with straps across my wrists.
The ceiling tiles were counted in my head, forty-eight of them, because there was nothing else to count.
A needle went into my arm, and the room filled with a sound.
Fenn's face leaned over me, kind and bright.
"This is the one, Mara. Your donor was very generous."
A glass vial sat in a rack by her elbow.
The label read D-24 in neat black ink.
I came back to the cabin with a scream stuck behind my teeth.
Forrest had me by the shoulders, his bare hands on my bare skin.
The pull in me was still, because it always was for him.
"Mara. Mara, look at me."
"I'm here."
"Stop. You hear me? Stop doing it."
I was shaking.
My fingers had gone grey to the second knuckle, and under them the black web on his chest had thinned by half.
