Chapter 24: Touch
He had rented the second floor of an old farmhouse twelve minutes from the gate.
There was a kitchen with a yellow table, a bedroom under the slope of the roof, and a window across the south wall.
The afternoon sun poured through it.
I stood in the middle of the bedroom with my diploma still in my hand and the winter light on my face.
I had never been in a room with that much daylight.
Forrest shut the door behind us and set a small pot on the windowsill.
It was the plant from my first night at Halloran, with five green leaves.
"You kept it."
"You told me you wouldn't touch it."
"I didn't."
"Good." He straightened and looked at me. "It's been waiting."
I put the diploma on the dresser and took off my coat.
My gloves were in the pocket, and I left them there.
He watched me do it, and his breathing changed.
"I'm eighteen," I said, "and I'm done with school, and you're twenty-four, and nobody is in charge of anything in this room."
"Somebody is."
"Who?"
He crossed the floor in three strides.
