Chapter 10: Under the Bed

I was on my feet before the engine died.

Brody zipped himself up in one jerk and slapped his wet hair flat.

I brushed the planks off my knees and held up the boat keys.

Dylan got out of the truck and shut the door very slowly.

"The office closes at four," he said.

"We were just going in," I said.

"You've been gone twenty minutes."

"The dock's long," Brody said. His voice was a squeak. He coughed and tried again. "It's a long dock, man."

Dylan looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at my knees, where the planks had left two red lines.

I watched him decide not to ask.

"Give me the keys," he said, and took them, and walked up the dock without another word.

The ride home was the quietest I had ever sat through.

Brody stared out the back window.

Wyatt stared at his hands.

Tate watched me in the side mirror, and when I met his eyes he looked away first.

That night I lay awake with every light off, thinking.

Two of them knew.

One of them was going to tell the other, if I let him.

I didn't think Dylan would hurt me.

I thought he would stop looking at me altogether, and I was surprised how much I hated that.

At midnight my door opened with no click, and Brody slid in.
