Chapter 19: Not Tonight
Cora did not go out to him at four.
She did not go out at eight, when the rain started.
At midnight the doorman rang up to the forty-first floor and said, with an apology in his voice, that Mr. Farwell was still on the step.
Cora put a coat over her nightgown and went down alone.
The lobby was dim and empty.
Through the glass she could see Brooks sitting on the top step with his arms around his knees.
He was soaked to the skin.
When she pushed the door open and stood under the awning, he looked up.
He had not shaved in four days.
"You came," he said.
"You wouldn't go."
"I'd have stayed till morning."
"I know," Cora said. "That's why I came."
He tried to stand and could not manage it on the first attempt.
"The board voted me out this afternoon," he said. "Eight to one. They put the chairman in my chair."
"I know that too."
"My mother has gone to her sister's. She won't take my calls. The lawyers you left me want a retainer I can't pay. The state's attorney calls tomorrow." He laughed, a cracked sound. "I thought you'd like to hear it from me."
"I don't like it."
"No," Brooks said. "You wouldn't."
The rain ticked on the awning.
"Come home, Cora," he said.
She said nothing.
"I mean it. I'll sign anything. I'll give the house to you, and the shares, and the car. We'll go somewhere nobody knows us. I'll learn to cook." He tried to smile, and it broke. "The timing's right now. It's right now, Cora. I swear it is."
