Chapter 23: What He Owes
"Yes," Torin said.
He stood on the gravel with the medic's bandage black at his shoulder, and he did not make an excuse.
The Chapter was watching him from the cars.
Thirty workers were watching, and the troopers, and my father.
My mother's voice was quiet.
"I mouthed it to you because you were the youngest man in the room.
You had a kind face.
I thought, that one will come back."
"I did not come back."
"No."
"I'll say it to them, ma'am. If you give me leave."
"It's not mine to give."
She looked at me.
I nodded.
"Speak," I said.
He went down on his knees on the gravel, in front of everyone, in the headlights.
He didn't do it the way he'd done it at the Carbarn, smooth and practiced.
He went down slowly, shedding a burden he'd carried too far.
"My name is Torin Sutcliffe," he said. "I was Augustin Thorpe's student for twenty-two years."
"I kept my seat on the Chapter all those years, and the seat is mine to answer for."
"I'm going to the Highway Patrol tonight with every name I know.
I'll give them what I saw, and what I heard him teach, and I'll plead to whatever they say I owe."
Nobody on the lawn made a sound.
"I leave the Chapter tonight," he said. "Take my name off your list."
The judge inclined her head.
"I'll strike it," she said.
He turned on his knees to my mother.
"I won't ask you to forgive me," he said.
"I'll go anywhere you tell me and answer anything you ask for as long as you want to ask."
