Chapter 15: The Farm
Birdie took one look at the table full of grown-ups and went to find a crayon.
It was Saturday, eight in the morning, and the farmhouse kitchen smelled like coffee and scorched bacon.
Dal's mother sat at the head of the table in a flannel shirt, with her arms folded and her gray braid over one shoulder.
Dal sat beside her, still hollow-eyed from a night of not sleeping.
Tabitha sat across from me in a hoodie with her hair down.
She had driven forty minutes in the dark with her phone off, and she had parked her car behind the barn.
She kept looking at the child.
"Is she the sister?" Birdie asked, loudly.
"I'm the stepsister," Tabitha said.
"Is she good or bad?"
"That's what we're about to find out," said Dal's mother.
Birdie nodded, satisfied, and climbed onto a chair with a fat purple crayon.
She flipped over a paper placemat and drew a big square.
"This is the church," she said. "Daddy told me there's a church."
Dal put his hand over his eyes.
