Chapter 22: The Block
The dry cleaner looked at Whitman, then at me.
"Who's this?"
"My ex-husband," I said.
"Ah," she said, the way you'd say it about a weather report.
Whitman held the envelope out to me.
I didn't take it.
He smiled and opened it himself, and read it aloud to the street.
"Unauthorized practice of law. Josephine Whitsett is not a member of the Rhode Island bar. She has no license, no insurance and a documented psychiatric history."
The barber came out of his shop next door with his scissors still in his hand.
A boy on a bike braked at the curb to watch.
"Any further advice given at this address will be reported to disciplinary counsel," Whitman read. "And to the bar's character and fitness committee."
He lowered the letter and looked at me.
"You know what that means, Jo. Your results never post. You never get sworn in. You'll be a paralegal at a storefront for the rest of your life."
"Is that a threat?"
"It's a courtesy." He looked up at Tito's sign in the window and laughed. "Ask Jo-Jo. That's adorable."
The barber looked at the sign, then at Whitman.
