Chapter 18: The Arena
The Arena of Embers held forty thousand people.
I had seen it in the game, a stone bowl with a sand floor and a royal box at the north end.
I had not seen it full.
They had come in from the whole city, and from the countryside, and the stands were a roaring wall of faces under the red clock.
It read 19.
They walked us out in chains across the sand, Emmett on one side and me on the other, with a line of knights between.
Sun flashed off Rennard's armor in the royal box.
The Queen Regent sat beside him, very straight, in a plain grey dress.
"People of Dawnreach!" Rennard's voice carried to the highest seats. "Before you stand two traitors."
A rumble ran through the crowd.
Not all of it was angry.
I felt it with a rush of hope.
"The Sunblade broke the oath blade in the Cathedral of Dawn. The Nightwarden has defiled the Ash Library. Together they have fled the law, burned a road, and turned the people of Brightwater against their sworn lord."
