Chapter 20: Three Days Left

I carried him out of the Arena.

I do not know how.

The sword of light was in my right hand, and it lit the way.

When Varek's hollow gaze came after us across the glass, I turned my head and stared back.

He laughed softly and let us go.

"Eighteen days," he said, behind me. "Take your time."

The Queen Regent's guards cleared a path, and Tavi ran at my side with her stick.

We reached the old temple of Saint Orla on the north road before the first star came out.

It was a roofless ruin on a hill.

I laid him on an altar slab and tore his shirt open.

The black glass was still in him, half an inch under his ribs, and a dark line crept out from it through his skin.

"Poison," Tavi said, and her voice shook. "It's Hollow poison. It will spread to the heart in days."

"How many?"

"Three. Maybe less."

"Can you cure it?"

"I can slow it. I can't stop it."

"Then slow it."

She did.

She bound the wound with herb and thread, and her small hands trembled.

When she finished, she stood and looked at me with wet eyes.
