Chapter 17: The Big Ask
Jo's POV
I stood outside the penthouse door at ten that night with my hand raised to knock, and I did not knock.
He had said "Good" in the elevator.
I had seen his face when he said it, and I knew a lie when I was handed one.
I had been handed one with my coffee, nine days ago.
The door opened before I did anything.
Mason stood there in shirtsleeves with no tie.
"I told you I'd be angry at lunch," I said.
"It's ten."
"I got over it. I want to ask you something."
He stepped back to let me in.
I walked to the middle of his enormous living room and turned around.
"Once a day," I said. "That was the deal. Today's is big."
"All right."
"Move in with me."
He didn't answer.
"A one-bedroom on West Twenty-fifth. Eleven-fifty. A radiator that knocks. You'd hate it." My voice wasn't steady. "I want my own door and I want you behind it. That's the whole thing. That's the biggest thing I've ever asked anyone for."
He took a long breath.
"I thought you were leaving," he said.
"I know."
"Troy said it in my lobby, and I stood there. I thought, she's going to find out what she's worth and walk out. Every woman who wanted something from me did, the moment she had it."
"I've known I'm rich for eight days," I said. "I've got nine million reasons to be anywhere else, and I'm standing in your living room."
His face broke open.
He crossed the floor in three steps and I met him halfway.
