Chapter 14: The Wound
"You've known for twenty years," I said to Sabine. "Say it."
She stopped smiling, and it was almost a relief.
"I was twenty-five when I married your father," she said. "He told me the first week what the room was."
Her voice was plain now, with no tears in it.
"I told the cook to say you killed your mother. I told her what to say to every child who asked."
Elias could not hear her, but he was watching her mouth.
He stepped between us.
"Why?" I said.
"Because a monster is easy to keep, and a lonely girl is easy to love. Your father needed the first."
She tilted her head toward the stone.
"I needed the second to fail, and it did."
"You cut the stone."
"I damped it. A hand with a chisel and a good reason." She shrugged. "Your father is old, Bryn. When the stone dies, so does his strength, and the pack finally has an Alpha who is not a liar. Mine."
"Yours and June's."
"June is nineteen."
That was the only answer she gave.
She drew a breath, and I knew what she was going to do before she did it.
"Don't," I said.
Sabine threw back her head and howled.
It was not the pack howl, because the stone was cut and the pack could not hear it.
It was her own voice, high and long, and it carried a mile through the cold air.
Far back along the road, a dog started barking in the pack house yard.
Elias grabbed my wrist and pulled.
We went off the road into the trees at a dead run.
I did not stop until the ground fell away and we dropped into the gully he had carried me across the first night.
