Chapter 20: The Courthouse

I looked at my sister on the church steps for a long time.

The wind pulled her hair across the pink cut on her forehead.

"Why?" I said.

She swallowed.

"I want to stop being the one Mom chose."

I didn't hug her.

I didn't say it was okay.

"Nine o'clock," I said. "I'll be there. I won't hold your hand."

"I didn't ask you to."

On Monday morning the King County Courthouse smelled of wet coats and floor wax.

Shelby was waiting on a bench outside the prosecutor's office on the fifth floor.

Navy blazer, hair pulled back tight, no makeup.

A public defender sat beside her, reading her phone.

Nate had come up with me in the elevator.

He stopped at the corner of the hallway.

"I'll be right here," he said.

"You can come closer."

"Not today. Today's hers to carry."

Shelby stood when she saw me.

She held out an envelope.

"I sent my license back this morning," she said. "To the nursing board. That's the copy."

I took it and looked at it.

Her signature, her license number, one line. I voluntarily surrender my license to practice.
