Chapter 16: The Assistant

Honora had six votes, and the session was at eight the next morning.

Ronan wanted to know who had handed her the note before then.

His assistant had a desk outside his office, with a plant, a brass lamp and a photograph of Alistair Maddox in a frame.

She was sixty-four, and she stood up when we came through the door.

"Mr. Maddox. You're early for your two o'clock."

"Sit down," Ronan said.

She sat.

He closed the door behind us and stood in front of her desk with his hands in his pockets.

I took the chair by the wall, where she could see me.

"The note I dictated on the 47th floor last Thursday," he said. "The one about Mrs. Dunning's exam."

Her eyes went to me and back.

"It never left my private drive. Yet Honora read it to the board on Tuesday."

"I don't know how."

"You copied it for her."

"Ronan, I don't."

"Tuesday night you left at six. Your login opened the drive at 6:40 from this desk."

That was a lie. He hadn't pulled any such log.

I watched her face, and I saw her understand that he was bluffing and that it didn't matter.

Her hand went to her mouth.

"She said you weren't well," she whispered.

Ronan didn't move.

"She came to my house at Christmas. She sat at my table. She said you were forgetting appointments and shouting at the staff, and that it was the same thing your father had."
