Chapter 16: Graze

The bullet had gone through the sleeve of his coat and taken a groove out of his left arm.

I saw it in the kitchen of the house on South Lowe, under the bright light.

His shirt was cut open and blood ran down to his wrist.

"It's a graze," Carmine said.

"It's an inch deep."

"It's a graze, Leona. I have had worse from a cheese grater."

"Sit," I said.

Teo hovered at the door with his phone at his ear and a face like a stormcloud.

"I'm calling the doctor," he said. "The boss is bleeding on the marble."

"Cancel it," said Carmine.

"Boss."

"Cancel it. My wife has it."

Teo looked at me.

I looked back.

My hands were steady, and that surprised me more than anyone.

"Bring me the kit from under the bathroom sink," I said, "and the vodka from the freezer. And then go and be useful somewhere else."

"Yes, ma'am," Teo said, and went to find the kit.

I cleaned the groove with a wet cloth, then poured the vodka over it.

Carmine drew a breath through his teeth and did not make a sound.

I pressed gauze on it, and wound the bandage around his arm, firm and neat.

"My father taught me," I said. "He fixed buses for thirty years."

"He bandaged his own knuckles at the kitchen table and told me to hand him the tape."

"He taught you well."

"He'd say you're an idiot for covering me."
