Chapter 19: The Night Before
He tied my wrists to the walnut headboard with a navy silk tie.
He drew it through the carved rail and knotted it with one hand, slowly, while I watched his fingers.
I pulled against it once to feel the give, and there was none.
My stomach dropped in the best way.
"Good," Carmine said, and kissed the inside of my wrist where the silk lay.
I lay on the gray sheets in the lamplight with my arms stretched over my head and nothing else on.
He stood at the foot of the bed in his shirt and trousers with his arm out of the sling for the first time.
The house was silent.
Teo had gone to the kitchen with a sandwich and an order to not hear anything.
Tomorrow at nine, the five old men would sit in a room, and Carmine would either keep his chair or lose it.
Neither of us said so.
"Tonight you get to listen," he said, "and do what I tell you."
"I always do."
"You don't. You argue, and then you do it."
"Yes, sir."
"Say that again."
"Yes, sir."
He closed his eyes for one second.
He knelt on the bed between my knees and ran his hands up the insides of my legs, from the ankles to the thighs.
He did not rush.
He kissed my knee and the soft place behind it.
He kissed the inside of my thigh and moved up in the slow patient pattern I knew by heart.
"Tomorrow you will stand up in front of the Table," he said, against my skin, "and you will say four things."
"What things?"
"Say them after me."
He kissed higher.
"I was in the cellar."
"I was in the cellar," I said, and my voice shook.
