Chapter 15: Knock

He opened the door with his shirt half unbuttoned and one boot off.

He looked at me.

Then down at my socks.

"You'll get splinters," he said.

"It's concrete."

"Concrete splinters."

"Wick."

He stopped joking.

He stood there in the doorway with the lamp behind him, and he didn't step back, and he didn't step aside.

"Say why you're here," he said quietly. "So neither of us has to guess."

"You said you wanted something from me."

"I did."

"You never said what."

"You know what."

"I want to hear it."

His hand tightened on the door frame.

"You," he said. "Not your brisket. Not your name on my rig. You."

I'd been in the green sundress Lorrie made me buy in town, in a store that sold boots and baptism gowns.

I hadn't taken it off.

I'd wanted him to see it.

"Then I'm asking," I said. "Not because I'm sad. Not because I'm seventy days out. Because I want you, and I'm tired of saying good night to you from a cot."

"Neva."

"Tell me no if it's no."

"It's not no." His voice dropped to nothing. "It's never been no."

"Then let me in."

He stepped back.

I walked in and shut the door behind me myself.

He stepped back and I came in past him.

The lamp was on.

The air unit roared.

I shut the door behind me myself.

He stood there with one boot on and one boot off.

I walked him back to the bed.

The back of his knees hit the mattress.

"Sit," I said.

He sat.

I pulled the other boot off his foot.

It dropped behind me on the carpet.

I unbuttoned the rest of his shirt.

My hands didn't shake.

I'd wondered if they would.

I pushed the shirt off his shoulders.

The scars ran down his right side like a map I'd finally been handed.

I put my mouth on the top of his shoulder.

He went still.

"I saw these in Memphis," I said against his skin.

"I know."

"You didn't want me to ask."

"I didn't."

"I'm not asking."

I dragged my mouth down over the ridge of scar to his collarbone.

His hand came up and settled on my waist.

Not pulling.

Just there.

"You're too slow," I said.

"I'm letting you lead."

"I know."

I put my mouth on the scar over his ribs.

His breath pulled in sharp.

My hands went to his jeans.

I worked the button open.

I looked up at him.

"Tell me what you want," I said.

His gray eyes held mine.

"To watch you take what you came here for."

I pulled his jeans down his hips.

He lifted up enough to let me.

His cock was hard against his stomach.

I wanted my mouth on it.

I wanted to hear the sound he'd make.

I put one hand around him and looked up again.

"Six years," I said. "I've been watching you lose."

"You've been watching me lose to you."

"That too."

I took him in my mouth.

His breath stuttered.

His hand tightened in my hair.

Not pulling.

Just holding.

I worked him slow.

I took my time.

The air unit rattled and hummed.

He made a sound low in his chest.

I pulled off and climbed up onto the bed.

I straddled him with the sundress still on.

His hands went to the hem.

"Take it off," I said.

He pulled it over my head.

He unclasped my bra.

He didn't hurry.

I watched him look at me.

"You're looking at me like a cut chart," I said.

"I'm memorizing where to put my hands."
