Chapter 15: Fire
We saw the glow from Eastern Avenue, a smear of orange over the water.
Noreen drove.
Nobody in the back seat spoke.
I had my hand over my mouth, and I did not know when I had put it there.
Boat Shed Three burned from the roof down.
The planks of the pier hissed under the heat, and sparks poured off the rafters into the harbor.
No fire engine had come yet.
A young man in a Stroud jacket stood at the head of the pier with soot on his face, waving his arms.
"The fire company went to the wrong dock," he shouted. "Somebody called in the wrong dock."
"Who's on the pier?" Donovan said.
"Nobody, sir. Just." He swallowed. "The old watchman, Mr. Ferrand's man, he sleeps in the back office. He's not answering."
I knew the old watchman.
He had taught me to bait a hook when I was six.
I did not remember deciding to move, but Donovan was already running.
He ran down my father's pier in his good black suit, straight at the fire, and he did not slow down.
