Chapter 22: Dinner at Greaves'
The bell over the door of Greaves' Diner rang, and forty people stopped talking at once.
They had pushed the booths together to make long tables, and somebody had hung a paper banner over the pie case.
It said WELCOME HOME in marker, and underneath, in different handwriting, *sorry about the skillet.*
"Which of you wrote that?" Emeric asked.
"Me," said Winnie, from behind the counter. "I'm not sorry about the skillet, but I got carried away."
He looked down at his charcoal coat, his white hair, and his hand in mine.
"They're only people," I murmured.
"That is what frightens me."
He walked in anyway, with his shoulders squared.
Nobody screamed.
The cab drivers lifted their coffee cups in a ragged salute.
A boy in a hooded sweatshirt stared at him over a plate of fries.
It was the old man's grandson, and he had a question he'd clearly been saving up.
"Can you really fly?"
