Chapter 12: The Gag

Two of Conrad's wolves carried Daphne to a guest room with a healer, and the hall emptied.

I did not wait for it to finish emptying.

I walked straight to the study at the back of the house with Conrad behind me, and I shut the door.

"Tell me," I said.

"Linnea."

"Tell me what she meant."

He stood by the fire with his hands hanging at his sides.

He opened his mouth.

Someone knocked at the study door, three quick raps and a pause.

I knew that knock.

It was how a woman in a green wool shawl had knocked on the door of my room every night when I was small.

I opened it.

Nan Whitaker stood in the corridor with rain in her white plait and mud to her knees.

She was holding the hand of a thin boy of fifteen, who stood half-hidden behind her shoulder and stared at the floor.

"Child," she said. "I hope it isn't too late."

She had driven a farm truck three hours in the dark.

The boy had slept on the seat.

She sat in the chair by the fire with her shawl pulled tight, and the boy sat on the floor beside her with his back against her legs, and she did not let go of his shoulder.

"Your father tore my cottage apart looking for that key," she said. "He told me he'd keep his word about leaving me alone, and then he put six men in my kitchen to ask me where it was."

"I'm sorry, Nan."

"You've nothing to be sorry for. I should have said all of this years ago." She looked at the tin box under my arm. "Open it."

I took out the photograph.

I held it out.

"This baby. Who is he?"

Nan looked at the boy at her feet.

"That's Tobin," she said gently. "Your brother."

The room tilted.

I looked at the boy, and he finally looked up.

He had my mother's grey eyes.

I had been looking at those eyes in the mirror every day of my life, and I had never once thought where they came from.
