Chapter 13: Labor and Delivery
The ambulance backed into the emergency bay at ten past one.
Two nurses were waiting with a rolling bed.
They took Brynn through a pair of swinging doors, and she did not look back at me.
A third nurse with a clipboard stopped me in the hall.
"Are you the father?"
"No."
"Her husband?"
"No."
"Then I can't take you past this line, sir. Is there family we should call?"
"There's a husband," I said. "He knows."
She wrote that down without any expression at all.
I sat in a plastic chair under a poster about hand washing.
I was still in my dress blues, and the rain had soaked the wool through.
Across from me a young man in a work jacket held a bunch of pink balloons by their ribbons.
He looked at my uniform and had the sense to say nothing.
Myra came through the sliding doors at half past one with my duffel on her shoulder and two coffees.
