Chapter 19: What He Gave Up
By dusk the whole yard of our cabin was full of wolves.
They had come from the pack house in twos and threes, and they stood among the pines with their children on their hips.
Cooks and warriors, laundry women, old men, a pair of teenage boys who had been Melody's guards that morning.
Garrick had locked himself in the pack house with a dozen loyal men and the beta, and nobody had gone in or out since noon.
I stood on the porch step with my mother on one side and Hester on the other.
Cade came out of the cabin behind us, and he did not wait to be told.
He walked down into the yard and stopped in front of all of them.
He was still bruised.
He had pulled on a plain work shirt, and every movement cost him.
He pushed back his sleeve.
On his left wrist was a thin silver band, scratched and old.
I had seen it all my life and never wondered about it.
"The heir's band," he said, loud and plain. "My father put it on me when I was ten. Every pack heir wears one."
He worked it off over his hand.
It left a pale ring on his skin.
"I'm giving it up." He held it so the firelight caught it. "I won't be the alpha of this pack. I won't take the seat my father stole, and I won't take it from his hand."
A murmur ran around the yard.
"I also give up the ring Melody Kensley was promised," he said. "And my father's house, and my father's name, as far as the pack law lets me."
"Ransom is your name, boy," an old warrior said from the back. "You can't put it down."
"Then I'll carry it and be ashamed." Cade did not turn. "If I ever sit in that chair, it will be because the true blood gave me leave. If she doesn't, I'll carry water for the kitchen the rest of my life."
