Chapter 19: Forged

Wendy's POV

My phone rang during a cleaning, and I let it go to voicemail.

When I came out at nine, there were four missed calls from Adam.

The last one had left a message.

"Your brother is in my lobby. Come if you want to. I won't talk to him until you do."

I left my gloves on the sink and drove downtown.

Colin stood in the middle of the Halden lobby, under forty feet of glass, in his Foundry cap.

He held a paper in front of him in both hands.

Adam stood ten feet away with his chief of staff and two security guards.

He did not look at Colin.

He looked at me when I came through the revolving door.

"Wendy." Colin's face changed. "Thank God. Tell your boyfriend to hear me out."

"I'm here."

"I have something." He held up the paper. "A second guarantee. Forty thousand dollars, for the beer system and the walk-in cooler. It's got your name on it."

I took it out of his hand.

It was a lender's form, two pages long, with a date from last March.

At the bottom, on the signature line, someone had written Wendy Carrow in blue ink.

The W had a loop on it.

I had never put a loop on my W in my life.

"I didn't sign this," I said.

"You did. You just forgot."

"Colin."

"You sign a hundred things for me, Wen. You never read them."

Adam's chief of staff lifted her phone and began filming.

Colin saw it and lowered his voice.

"Look. If you stop paying, the lender comes for you. Forty grand, plus the rent. It would ruin you. But Mr. MacGovern here could make this go away. Quietly. Cover the balance, and I'll never bring it up."
