Chapter 5: In the Corridor

I found him again that afternoon, in the long corridor that ran along the north wall.

He was walking fast with two guards behind him, and when he saw my face he sent them away with one flick of his hand.

"The Madam asked me a question," I said.

"I heard her."

"She asked whether you knew what my sister left behind."

Something moved behind his eyes and was gone.

"You told me she said nothing," he said.

"I lied. You've never lied?"

"Not to a woman who could do something about it."

He started to walk past me.

I stepped into his way, which was stupid, because he was twice my width.

"What did Delphine leave?" I said.

"I don't know."

"You do. Your whole face went still."

"My face does that when I'm thinking."

"Then what are you thinking?"

"That you should rest your knee."

I laughed, short and hard.

"Don't," I said. "Don't do the soft voice and the knee. You think I'm a lamb."

"I think you're bleeding through your bandage again."

"Answer me."

"When I know, I will tell you."

"When you know what?"

His mouth closed.

The corridor was very quiet. Dust turned in the light from the high windows.

"Fine," I said. "Then I'll say it. I've been saving it since the cell."

"Say it."

"You swore to her. She told me. She sat on my bed and cried because she was so happy, and she said a wolf Alpha had given her his word."

His hands hung at his sides.

"She waited for you every day," I said. "Every single day, with her hand on her belly, by the front window, in the cold, until the Madam sent a girl to drag her away from the glass."
