Chapter 10: The Engraving
"Brady Overcash says my husband stole a ring," I repeated. "Which ring?"
The deputy looked at his notebook again, unhappily.
"A large square diamond, ma'am. He says it was seen on your hand last night at a party. He says your husband had no lawful way to own it."
"He's right that it's on my hand."
I held it up.
"Ma'am, I'm going to need to ask where that came from."
"Ask him," I said, and stepped aside.
Quinton came out onto the cottage step in his sweatpants, the white T-shirt and my grandmother's wool socks.
"Merry Christmas, Deputy," he said. "Let's do this outside, where everybody can hear."
He walked past the deputy, down the steps and onto the wet grass in his socks.
The deputy followed him.
So did I.
It was a small street, and it was Christmas morning.
Every porch had somebody on it.
The kids next door in their new pajamas. The retired couple across the alley with their coffee. The young dad two doors down with a toddler on his hip, who'd been at the party last night and seen my mother's hand hit my face.
My mother came down off her patio in her quilted robe.
Brady came behind her, holding his coffee mug.
"Officer," my mother said, in her Rose Club voice, "I'm so sorry about this. My daughter has made some very bad decisions this week."
"Yes, ma'am."
"That man came to my house with nothing. He was in the garage. And then last night she's wearing a diamond like that."
"Did you see him take it from anyone, ma'am?"
My mother hesitated.
"Well, no. But you only have to look at him."
The deputy looked at him.
"Ma'am?" The deputy turned to me. "Could I see it, please?"
I took the ring off and put it in his palm.
He tilted it toward the sky.
"There's writing inside," he said.
