Chapter 5: A Twenty for a Hot Meal

Quinton called his security chief at two in the morning, standing at the window in his boxers.

He spoke so quietly I only caught the end.

"No. Nobody comes to the house. She'd hate it." A pause. "Then watch the alley."

He hung up and stood there looking out at the dark.

"He knows where I am," he said. "He's known for a while, I think. He just wants me to know he knows."

"Is he going to hurt you?"

"Not this week." He turned around. "This week he needs me alive and looking crazy."

"So what do we do?"

"Nothing. We go to bed."

"And tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow you show me your town."

I sat up with the quilt around me.

"You want to go out? With him watching?"

"I spent six months hiding, Katie." He came back to the bed. "I'm not going to spend my honeymoon doing it."

The downtown square in Tyler does a Christmas market the week before Christmas.

White tents around the old courthouse lawn, lights strung through the live oaks, a brass band from the high school playing "Silent Night" a little flat.

Quinton bought a cup of cider and a fried pie from every booth that offered one.

"You're going to be sick," I said.

"I lived on day-old rolls for half a year."

"My rolls were excellent."

"Your rolls were the best part of my day." He bit the pie. "This is the second."

I was laughing at him when I heard my name.

"Katie Verrill! As I live and breathe."

Brady was coming across the grass with two men from the Ford dealership, holding a beer from the German tent.

He was in a quarter-zip with the truck company's logo on the chest.

He looked happy.

He looked like a man who'd never once lost sleep.

"I thought you lived in Chicago now," I said.

"I'm in town for the dealership account. Your mama's very generous with her business." He grinned at his friends. "Y'all, this is her. The one I told you about."
