Chapter 8: The Microphone
Nobody clapped.
Sixty people stood in my mother's front room holding their drinks, and not one of them knew what to do with their hands.
The retired judge set his glass down on the mantel with a click.
My mother kept smiling.
She had decided this would be a happy moment, and she was going to make it one if it killed every person in the house.
"I know it's a surprise," she said. "But love doesn't check the calendar."
Brady put his arm around her waist.
He finally looked at me across the room.
He smiled, just a little.
That smile was the thing that got me moving.
The string trio had a microphone on a stand for the girl who sang "O Holy Night".
I crossed the room in my red dress and took it off the stand.
The feedback squealed.
Sixty heads turned.
"Katie," my mother said. Her voice dropped to the one she used on salesmen. "Sit down."
"I just want to make a toast, Mama."
"Kathleen."
"To the happy couple." I raised the microphone like a glass. "Brady, I have one question, and I think everybody here would like the answer. On Friday, when you took your ring back at O'Hare, you said you'd found a woman who could actually do something for you."
The bank president coughed.
Somebody near the tree whispered, "O'Hare?"
"Was that my mother?" I said. "Or was it the dealership?"
Brady's arm came off my mother's waist.
"That's enough," he said.
"Four days." I looked at my mother. "He was engaged to me four days ago, Mama. His ring was on my hand on Friday afternoon. How long have you two been together?"
My mother's face had gone from pink to white to a color I'd never seen on it.
