Chapter 7: The Back Dock
I did not call the police, and I did not call a lawyer.
I opened my phone, pressed the red button to go live, and said, "My stepfather is moving my mother out of St. Brendan's tonight. The back dock. Nine o'clock."
Then I put the phone in Hoyt's hand and ran for the stairs.
By ten to nine, forty people stood on the concrete behind the hospital.
Some of them wore scrubs.
Some of them held up phones with the little red dot already on.
A woman in a church coat held a thermos and said, "Honey, I watched the whole thing. Whatever you need."
At 8:58, a white van backed up to the dock with its lights off.
A heavy man in a dark coat climbed down from the passenger side.
It was the driver from the garage.
Behind him came a nurse in a navy cardigan I had never seen, pushing a wheelchair with a blanket folded on the seat.
"Ms. Fenn," the driver said. "Step aside, please."
"No."
"Mr. Stroud has signed the transfer."
"Then Mr. Stroud can come down and say so."
The nurse in the cardigan looked at the crowd and at the phones.
"I don't have to do this," she said, to nobody.
"Then don't," the woman with the thermos said.
The loading door opened behind us, and Ellen came out in a hospital gown with her tablet under one arm.
A real nurse walked beside her, the one from the fourth floor, with one hand lightly on her back.
Behind them came the patient advocate in a gray blazer, holding a folder.
Ellen did not use the wheelchair.
She walked to the edge of the dock on her own feet, and she was very slow, and she held the rail.
I wanted to run to her and carry her, and I did not dare.
