Chapter 11: Vincent on the Roof

"Florian," Dominik said through the door. "Come out."

Florian looked down at me. His hair was a mess, and he was still inside me.

"Don't," I whispered.

"I'm not going anywhere," he called back, too loud and too cheerful.

Silence.

I heard the second pair of feet shift, and then a low voice said something I could not catch.

Boots went down the hall. They went slowly, and they did not come back.

Florian sighed quietly. "That was Vincent. He took him away."

"Good."

"You're not mad?"

"I'm furious," I said, and I pulled his arm over my waist. "Go to sleep."

He fell asleep in under a minute with his face in my neck, snoring softly. I lay awake and stared at the ceiling beams.

At two I eased out from under him.

I put on a sweater and climbed through the attic window onto the flat part of the roof, the one that looked over the dark lake.

The air was cold. I sat with my knees against my chest and watched the moon's reflection on the water.

"I hoped you'd come up here," Vincent said behind me.

I did not turn around.

He climbed out and sat a careful arm's length away, in his shirtsleeves, with his boots dangling over the gutter.

"Dominik is asleep in the boathouse," he said. "Felix is on the couch. I told them you needed a night."

"You told them."

"I told them I'd stand outside your door, and that if anyone knocked I'd break his hand."

"That's very protective."

"It's very late," Vincent said, and nearly smiled.

I pulled my sleeves over my hands.

"You cut the pills," I said.

He did not pretend.

"Every one of them. The first time Dominik bought them, I took the bottle out of his room while he was in the shower. I cut each one and put it back." His jaw tightened. "A whole one would have put you under until noon. A half barely touches a woman your size, if she's had one glass."
