Chapter 27: Felix Goes Up the Path

Felix took the cliff path in the dark with a torch he did not switch on.

He knew every stone of it by now.

He had walked it with Hyunjin on the first night, laughing.

He had walked it last night, soaked to the bone, to tell Chan he was an idiot.

Tonight he was angry in a way he had not been since Sydney.

Chan was still on the third step.

The rain had run down the back of his collar and his lips had gone faintly blue.

He sat with his hands hanging between his knees.

Felix stopped in front of him.

"Get up."

"Lix."

"Get up, hyung."

Chan stood. It took him two tries.

Felix looked at his old friend's face, the face he had known since he was seventeen and new to Seoul, and his anger wobbled.

He did not let it.

"Inside," he said.

The cabin was cold, and the woodstove had burned to grey.

Felix shut the door behind them and did not turn on a lamp.

"You signed seven years," he said. "You wrote Missy out of your life in a rider on page nine."

"Felix."

"You told no one. And you sat on a rotten step in the rain while the rest of us decided what to do."

"I didn't want to be in the room."

"No. You wanted us all to have a good life and not be asked."

Chan said nothing.

"Do you know what Hyunjin did today?" Felix said. "He took the pen off the desk. Hyunjin, who apologizes to doors. He said no to the company in front of the manager."
