Chapter 6: Dalton Crosses Alone
Dalton came alone, on foot, at noon on the third day.
He stood at the middle of the bridge with his hands out of his pockets, where everyone could see them.
Stonepine's sentries sent word up to the lodge, and I went down to meet him.
Kieran's Beta came with me. Kieran stayed behind at my request.
"I don't want him to think I need a man standing behind me," I had said.
"You don't," Kieran said. "That's the point. I'll be at the window."
The window was a quarter mile away. I knew he would see everything anyway.
Dalton looked terrible.
His blond hair was greasy and his eyes were red. A pack runner from Hollow Creek hung back on the far bank, watching.
"Nessa," he said. "Thank God."
"What do you want?"
"I want to talk. Just talk. Please."
He had never said please to me in his life.
"Talk, then."
"Dad's sick." He rubbed his face. "Not sick sick. The pack. Nobody can shift. Garson tried at the creek yesterday and nothing happened. He screamed for an hour. Anson's been hitting the walls."
"I heard."
"The hunters can't track. The pups are crying all night. Nessa, you have to come back."
"I don't have to do anything."
"You do!" His voice cracked. He lowered it. "Look. Margot's sorry. We all are. Come home for one week. Just let the elders see you. Then we'll talk about whatever you want."
