Chapter 22: Two Doors
Tom took the pen.
He clicked it once and put it in the inside pocket of his jacket, over his heart.
"December eighth," he said. "Call time is four. I'll send a car."
"I'll drive."
"Of course you will."
He shook my hand across the counter.
His hand was warm and dry, and he held on one second too long, the way he used to at investor dinners.
Then he nodded to the college boys, and he left.
The bell rang behind him.
Nobody moved.
At the far end of the counter, Jem set the padlock down very carefully.
He walked through the workshop, past Kath, past the grinder, and out the back door into the alley.
He didn't slam it.
It was the same as my mother's bedroom door.
"Lindy," Kath said. "What did you just do?"
"Not now."
"Lindy."
"Not now, Kath."
I went out the back after him.
The alley was empty.
The van was gone.
He came back at nine that night.
I was sitting on the outside stairs up to my apartment, in my coat, in the rain.
The van pulled into the alley.
