Chapter 12: Ask Him

On Monday morning I took the elevator to the fortieth floor with my phone recording in my jacket pocket.

Orson was in the lobby, waiting by the doors with his hands in his coat.

He had not tried to stop me.

He had said only, "If you want me, I'll hear it from here," and I had believed him.

Broderick's office door was shut this time.

I opened it without knocking.

He was standing at the window with his back to the room, and he did not turn around.

"I wondered how long it would take you," he said.

"Why did you never bite me?"

His shoulders moved.

"Close the door."

I closed it, and stayed where I was.

"You were nine," I said. "Your father had my wolf sealed in a clinic on Dearborn Street, and you sat next to my bed. My mother told me. I have the card."

For a moment he did not move at all.

Then he turned, slowly, and I saw he was not even surprised.

He looked tired, and very calm.

"Well," he said. "That's one thing off my back."

"You knew."

"I've known since I was thirteen."

"My wolf is not missing."

"It's sleeping." He crossed to the desk and leaned on it. "Sit down, Keira. You're swaying."

"I'm standing."

"Then stand." He sighed. "My father sealed it because you were born into the old Queen line. Do you know what that is?"

"No."

"It's the oldest blood in the pack. The charter says an Alpha holds his seat only while a woman of that line is bound to his house. If she wakes and chooses someone else, the seat goes with her." He looked at his own hand. "My father had a failing pack and a girl of nine in a cabin whose wolf had just come up. He had her put under, and he had her mother thank him."
