Chapter 14: Mate

Orson's POV

She slept for three hours on the couch in my office, wrapped in my coat.

I did not leave the room.

I sat in the chair across from her with my torn shirt still on and watched the silver go out of her eyes by degrees.

When she woke, she looked at the ceiling first and then at me.

"I was a wolf," she said.

"You were."

"Was I any good?"

"You were white," I said. "With silver at the edges. I have never seen a coat like it."

She sat up slowly and held the coat shut at her collar.

"Tell me what happened to my neck."

I had practiced this for three years.

I had said it to the windows of this office and to the water on Lake Shore Drive, and I had never once got to the end of the sentence.

"The pull you felt for Broderick was never a mate bond," I said. "It was a leash. His father's seal made it, and Broderick kept it tight."

"And now?"

"Now the leash is gone, and the real bond has nothing in the way of it."

She looked at me for a long moment.

"Say it plainly, Orson."

"You are my mate."

The room was very quiet.

"I knew it at the gala, three years ago," I said. "You looked across that ballroom at me, and the whole floor tilted. I thought, that is Broderick Davenant's woman, and I have just found out what I cannot have."
