Chapter 24: The Creek Bottom Wedding
The lawyer unfolded the paper and read it to himself first.
Then he took off his glasses, wiped them on his bolo tie, and put them back on.
"Quitclaim deed," he read aloud. "Casey Marie Stiles conveys to Colby Dean Henning and Casey Marie Stiles, husband and wife, as joint owners, the home place."
"Together with the barn, the shop, the Quonset, the cattle, every piece of machinery on either farm, and the porch swing."
Somebody in the back laughed, and somebody else said, "Shh."
"Consideration," the lawyer said, and his voice did the thing it had done once before, a year ago.
"Ten dollars, and I'd rather he had it."
Nobody in the room moved.
I looked at my husband.
He sat with his hat in both hands and his mouth slightly open.
"You said you wouldn't take anything," I said.
"I said I wouldn't ask."
"I'm not making you take it. I'm telling you where it's going."
"Casey."
"You gave me every acre you had, and you stood in a room and let the whole county call you a thief. I don't have a way to give that back. So I'm giving you half of everything I have, and I'm not asking you to say anything."
He didn't say anything.
He reached into his shirt pocket and took out a crumpled ten-dollar bill.
He laid it on the desk, smoothed it flat, and picked up the lawyer's pen.
Under my name, in square capitals, he signed C. D. Henning.
"Consideration received," he said, a little hoarsely.
The room came apart.
The Pioneer cap man whooped like it was a rodeo, and the judge stood on his chair, and Colby's mother wept into a cookie.
The lawyer rapped the desk with the clock.
"Recording is Monday," he said. "I'm told the Register of Deeds will be hearing from a gentleman in a tie at eight o'clock sharp."
