Chapter 12: The Gala

Abby's POV

The Ashworth Freight gala was held in a ballroom glittering with crystal chandeliers, and I took a slow breath to stay calm.

I wore the green dress.

Dell wore a black suit and a name tag that said ABBY'S LAWYER, which she'd made herself.

"I'm your plus-one," she said, steering me through the crowd with one hand on my back. "Anyone asks, I'm your lawyer."

"Do you know anything about law?"

"I know how to look like I'm about to say 'objection.'"

Beckett was waiting by the doors in a dark suit with no tie.

He took my hand and kissed my knuckles in front of everyone, and nobody was filming, and I realized I didn't care if they were.

"You look unbelievable," he said.

"The dress is two hundred and fifty."

"I'll pay it twice."

"Hands are fifty."

"I'm holding two. That's a hundred."

"You're learning."

Across the room, at the head table, Rowan stood up when he saw us.

He did not smile, but he didn't look away either.

He looked at Beckett's hand around mine, and then at my face.

I looked at the chandelier.

Dinner was served, and I sat between the two of them at the long table, and it was the most nerve-racking meal of my life.

Beckett's knee rested against my left leg under the tablecloth.

Rowan's elbow rested very near my right arm on top of it.

Neither moved.
