Chapter 11: The Inscription
The hall was full by eight o'clock.
Three hundred wolves sat at long tables under strings of lights, and the smell of burned onions still hung in the air.
I sat near the back beside Cormac. My ankle was wrapped, and the Alpha was at the head table, not looking at me.
The Elder rapped her stick on the floor, and the room went quiet.
"We have a declaration," she said. "Rhett Sawyer."
He walked up the center aisle in his best black coat, with his hair neat and a bunch of white flowers in one hand.
He stepped onto the stage and turned to face the crowd.
For a moment his eyes found mine, and the smile did not move.
"Friends," Rhett said. "Elder. Alpha. I've served this pack for eleven years, and I have always put it first."
Nobody laughed. Cormac made a low, unhappy noise.
"Tonight I want to put something else first. I have found a woman of honor and kindness. I have never been so sure of anything." He turned. "Jodie Ashcroft, will you accept my courtship?"
She had been waiting at the foot of the stage in a green dress, with her hands folded.
She came up the steps and took the flowers.
"I accept," she said.
Her voice carried to the back wall.
The hall applauded.
Rhett took a small gray box from his pocket and opened it.
He glanced down at the bracelet and did not look closely.
Jodie and I had gone back to the cabin two days ago, while he was on shift. We left a copy from a jewelry stall in town in that box under his socks: plain silver, a hook clasp, nothing engraved.
