Chapter 16: The Kitchen
On New Year's Eve my mother put the log page on the kitchen table beside the salt cellar and did not say a word about it.
She had ironed it flat.
Henrik stood in the doorway in a clean shirt with his cap in his hands, and he looked ready to be told to leave.
"Sit," my mother said.
He sat in the chair by the window.
It was not my father's chair, but it was the one next to it.
She read the page again, standing, with her glasses on the end of her nose.
I watched her lips move on one line.
"Come for us after," she said.
"Yes, ma'am," Henrik said.
"He said that to the dock hands every morning of his life. Go on, I'll come after."
Her voice was dry and perfectly steady.
"I have wanted a reason for twenty months," she said. "I did not know it would be that one."
She took off her glasses and folded them.
