Chapter 20: On the Record
Dane went to Cleveland that night, and he did not ask me to come.
He drove back the three hours in the dark and did not sleep.
I know, because Bev watched it on her laptop at the kitchen table, glasses down her nose.
She made me sit and watch it too.
The hospital had put out a notice at midnight.
At eight the next morning every channel in Ohio had a camera in the atrium under the banner for the new wing.
The board was seated in a row at a long table, in navy and gray.
Dane walked to the podium alone.
He wore the same black suit from the funeral and no tie.
He did not thank anyone for coming.
"My son died on Tuesday morning at four fifty-two," he said.
The room went quiet in a way I could hear through a laptop speaker.
"His name was Timmy Brewer. He was five. He had a hole in his heart and a gift for drawing dogs."
