He Broke the Heart That Saved Him novel · Chapter 22 of 24
Chapter 22: Dear Donor
I read the seventh letter on the third night after the funeral.
Bev had gone up to bed.
The house was quiet in the way houses are when a child has stopped living in them.
His sneakers were still by the back door, one on its side.
I had not been able to move them.
I sat at the kitchen table with a mug of nothing and slit the tape with a butter knife.
The letter was four pages in the square hand, a little shaky near the end.
Dear donor,
Seven years.
I counted on my fingers.
I have everything a man could ask for and I have never been so tired of being grateful.
My mother says it's best I never know your name.
She says you gave me a gift and a gift has no strings.
I used to believe that.
I am engaged to a woman who sat by my bed.
